Word Counter

The Unicode-accurate word counter: correct counts in every language — Chinese and Japanese count like a word processor, emoji count as one character (👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 is 1, not 11), and sentences aren't fooled by "Mr." or "3.14". Plus Flesch readability scores, keyword density, social-media character limits, a writing goal tracker, reading & speaking time — live as you type. Your text never leaves your browser, and drafts auto-save locally.

Word Counter — Unicode-Accurate Counts, Readability & Keyword Density

Word counts matter. College essays have minimum requirements. Blog posts need SEO-optimized lengths. Social media captions have character limits. Ad copy must fit exact specifications. This Word Counter gives you every statistic in real time as you type — and, unlike most counters, it gets the hard cases right.

Most online counters use naive splitting that miscounts real-world text: an emoji like 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 gets counted as 11 characters, Chinese and Japanese text comes out as “1 word”, and every “Mr.” or “3.14” falsely ends a sentence. This tool counts user-visible characters (that family emoji is exactly 1), follows the word-processor convention for words in every language — including per-character counting for Chinese and Japanese — and uses locale-aware sentence detection with an abbreviation guard. On top of the counts you get Flesch readability scores, keyword density, platform character limits, a writing goal tracker and reading/speaking time. No signup, no cost.

How the Word Counter Works

1. Type, Paste or Import

Paste content from Word, Google Docs or email, type directly, or import a .txt / .md file. Drafts auto-save in your browser so nothing is lost.

2. Instant Statistics

Words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, lines, unique words and case counts update live — select part of the text to get stats for just the selection.

3. Readability & Time

Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade scores for English text, plus reading time (225 wpm) and speaking time (140 wpm) estimates.

4. Density, Goals & Limits

Keyword density with a common-words filter for SEO, a word-count goal with a progress bar, and live character limits for X/Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, SMS, YouTube titles and meta descriptions.

More Than Just a Word Count

Accurate in Every Language

English, Hindi, Arabic, Russian, Korean and other spaced languages count by words; Chinese and Japanese count per character, the way word processors do. Contractions (don't) and hyphenated compounds (state-of-the-art) count as one word.

Emoji-Accurate Characters

Characters are counted as what you actually see: complex emoji, flags and accented letters each count as one. Both with-spaces and without-spaces counts are shown for platform limits.

Readability Scores

Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level computed live for English text, with average words per sentence and word length — know if you're writing for the right audience.

SEO Keyword Density

See your top 10 words with counts and density percentages, with a toggle to ignore common words. Aim for 1-2% on your target keyword without over-stuffing.

Goals & Platform Limits

Set a word-count target and watch the progress bar fill. Live character budgets for X/Twitter (280), SMS (160), meta descriptions (160), YouTube titles (100), Instagram (2,200) and LinkedIn (3,000).

Private and Free

Runs entirely in your browser — no text is sent anywhere. Drafts auto-save locally, import .txt/.md files, copy or download your text and stats. No signup, no tracking.

Word Counter — FAQs

Reading time uses 225 words per minute — the average adult silent-reading speed — and speaking time uses 140 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace. A 1,000-word article is roughly 4½ minutes of reading or 7 minutes of speaking.

Yes — and differently per script, which is what accuracy requires. Spaced languages (Hindi, Tamil, French, Arabic, Korean, Russian…) count by word boundaries. Chinese and Japanese, which are written without spaces, are counted per character the way word processors do. Sentence detection recognises the Hindi danda (।) and Chinese/Japanese full stops (。!?) too.

Naive counters split on spaces and count raw code units. That makes a family emoji “11 characters”, all of Chinese “one word”, and “Mr. Smith went home.” two sentences. This tool counts visible characters (grapheme clusters), applies the word-processor convention per script, and guards sentence detection against abbreviations, initials and decimals — so its numbers match what Word or Google Docs would tell you.

Keyword density is how often a word appears relative to the total word count. For SEO, keeping your target keyword around 1-2% signals relevance without triggering keyword-stuffing penalties. The density panel shows your top 10 words live, and you can toggle whether common words (the, and, of…) are ignored.

Completely free — no signup needed. Everything runs in your browser: no text is ever sent to a server. Drafts auto-save only to your own browser's local storage, and you can discard them any time.
