How Your Age Is Calculated
The calculator counts the whole months from your birth date to the second date (today, unless you change it), then the days left over; twelve months make a year. A month is complete on the same day of the month as your birthday, or on the last day of a shorter month: for someone born on 31 January that is 28 February (29 in a leap year), so on 1 March of a non-leap year they are 1 month and 1 day past their birthday. The totals are the whole days, hours and minutes between the two dates, both taken at midnight.
The next birthday is your birthday in the second date’s year, or the following year’s if it has already passed; a 29 February birthday counts as 28 February in non-leap years.
Worked example: born on 15 August 1990, with the second date set to 4 October 2026.
- Age: 36 years, 1 month and 19 days — 15 August to 15 September is 1 month, then 19 more days to 4 October.
- Totals: 13,199 days, 316,776 hours and 19,006,560 minutes.
- Next birthday: in 315 days, on Sunday 15 August 2027.
