Flat vs Reducing Rate Calculator — Don't Get Fooled by "Lower" Interest Rates

"7% interest only!" sounds great until you discover it's a flat rate — which actually equates to about 13% on a reducing balance basis. Many vehicle finance, consumer durable, and small lending products quote rates in flat terms, making them look cheaper than they really are. Our Flat vs Reducing Rate Calculator shows the true cost so you can compare apples to apples.

Enter the loan amount, the interest rate and the tenure, and the calculator works out the EMI, total interest and total cost under both methods at that same rate, and how much less the reducing-balance loan costs. No signup, no cost.

2. Interest Rate

3. Tenure

4. View Comparison

See the EMI, total interest and total cost under both methods side by side, and how much the reducing-balance method saves.

Flat vs Reducing Rate — FAQs

Flat rate calculates interest on the original principal throughout the loan tenure. Reducing rate calculates interest only on the outstanding (declining) principal each month. For the same headline rate, reducing is much cheaper for the borrower.

Flat rates make loans look cheaper than they actually are — a 7% flat is roughly equivalent to a 13% reducing rate. Vehicle finance and consumer durable loans frequently quote flat rates, hoping borrowers won't recalculate.

A rough rule: reducing rate ≈ flat rate × 1.85 for 3-5 year loans; the exact figure is the reducing rate that gives the same EMI. This calculator doesn’t convert rates — it applies one rate both ways so you can see the difference in cost.
