How Compound Interest Is Calculated
The calculator uses A = P × (1 + r ÷ n)n × t, where P is the principal, r is the annual rate as a decimal, n is how many times a year interest is compounded and t is the number of years. The interest earned is A minus P. Each row of the year-wise table grows the balance by one year of the same compounding.
Worked example: ₹1,00,000 at 7% a year for 10 years, compounded monthly (the calculator’s starting values), shown in rupees.
- n = 12, so interest is added every month at 7 ÷ 12 = 0.5833%.
- Future value = ₹2,00,966, of which ₹1,00,966 is interest.
- Year 1 earns ₹7,229 — a little more than 7% of ₹1,00,000, because of monthly compounding — and year 10 earns ₹13,548.
Amounts are rounded to the nearest rupee on screen; the calculation itself is not rounded, so multiplying the rounded figures can differ by a few rupees.
